  • Mike Tyson made an impressive start to his fight with Jake Paul in Texas.

Mike Tyson's highly anticipated return to the boxing ring has ended in an entirely expected defeat to YouTuber-turned boxer, Jake Paul, in front of 72,300 fans in Texas and millions more on streaming service Netflix.

Paul won a unanimous points victory over the former undisputed heavyweight champion, 31-years his senior, with one judge scoring it 80-72 and the other two 79-73.

"He is an icon," Paul gushed in a crowded ring after the eight-round fight.

"It was an honour to fight him."

As many expected and plenty feared, Tyson was a fragile shell of the fighter who once struck fear into the entire sport.

His desperate footwork saw the 58-year-old shuffling around the ring with barely any semblance of the ferocious terror he once was.

Despite a bright start and the bout being fought over two-minute rounds, Tyson badly tired and was barely able to land a glove on Paul, who danced around the ring to jeers from the capacity crowd at Arlington's AT&T Stadium.

Comfortable in the knowledge he had defeated Tyson, Paul bowed to his opponent before the final bell, at which point they embraced.

"He is a very good fighter," Tyson said post-fight.

"I didn't prove nothing to anyone, just myself. I'm not one of these guys who goes out to please the world, I'm just happy with what I can do."

Tyson refused to say he would not return to the ring in the future, even suggesting he would be open to fighting Jake's brother, Logan Paul, who went the distance with Floyd Mayweather in 2021.

Katie Taylor defeats Amanda Serrano in bloodbath

Katie Taylor won a second thriller against Amanda Serrano.

The tepid anticlimax of the main event was a poor climax to what had been a thrilling night of boxing.

In the co-main, Irish fighter Katie Taylor retained her undisputed super lightweight titles with a bloodbath of a victory over Amanda Serrano.

Serrano was horribly cut by an accidental headbutt from Taylor, the gruesome injury clearly hampering the seven-weight world champion.

Taylor, who was later harshly deducted a point by the referee who appeared to change his mind over whether the frequent head clashes between the southpaw and orthodox fighter were accidental or not, was by unanimous decision, all three scoring it 95-94 in the Irishwoman's favour.

The result was not well received by the Texas crowd, who roundly booed Taylor as she claimed her belts, before heralding the fight as "an amazing moment in women's boxing".

"It was an absolute slugfest, a war," Taylor said after the fight.

"I don't care if the crowd of the commentary team don't like it.

"I certainly wasn't fighting dirty. It gets rough in there."

A disappointed Serrano, who lost the first meeting between the pair by split decision at Madison Square Garden in 2022, was visibly emotional at the decision.

"I knew it if went to the judges it was going to be a little shady," she said, later describing the darling of Irish sport as a "dirty" fighter.

"She kept headbutting me, but we knew that from the very beginning".

In the other world title fight on the undercard, defending WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios retained his title against Abel Ramos after a barn-burner of a contest which the judges ruled a split decision draw.
