Harris takes the stage in Scranton

The Vice-President and Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, has spoken at her first rally of the day, in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She hit her usual talking points, including the economy and women's reproductive rights.

The crowd was very supportive (as you'd expect - these are campaign events, obviously), although there was a bit of an awkward moment when Harris tried to start a chant and people didn't follow it.

She said "let's get out to vote" multiple times while the room remained silent.

Kamala Harris was full of energy in Scranton.

Harris then spoke about how joyful her campainging had been.

"I go into rooms with people who have seemingly nothing in common and they have everything in common," she said.

"We're good. We're going to keep doing this work with the optimism that is required to be strong."

She described the mission of her party and supporters as "hard work, good work and joyful work".

Kamala Harris said her campaign had been 'full of joy'.

Trump holds first rally of the day

Donald Trump revs up the crowd at the JS Dorton Arena.

Donald Trump is holding four (yes, four) rallies on Monday, US time. The first of these took place in Raleigh, North Carolina.

He's got other rallies in:

  • Reading, Pennsylvania at 2pm (6am Tuesday AEDT)
  • Pittsburg, Pennsylvania at 6pm (10am Tuesday AEDT)
  • Grand Rapids, Michigan at 10:30pm (2:30pm AEDT)

Trump has been spending quite a lot of time in North Carolina, despite the fact it's a state he has never lost.

Donald Trump makes a point to supporters in North Carolina.

Among his various favourite topics, he's spoken about how he saved NASA the last time he was president. He said the organisation had grass and weeds growing out of cracks in its launching pads before he came to office.

"We want to go to Mars and all, but what I want it [NASA] for is defence," Trump tells the crowd.

"I don't want to say it's going to be more important than the marines because they'll never talk to me again.

"China has got a lot of stuff out there. Russia has got a lot of stuff up there too, although they're very busy killing people."

Trump says the war in Ukraine would have never happened if he was still president.

Changing topics like this is something the Republican nominee does a lot in interviews and at his rallies. He even has a word for it "the weave".

There was a packed crowd on hand in North Carolina to hear Donald Trump speak

Later, he spoke about what "a terrible job" the current government had done.

"Kamala, get the hell outta' here, you're fired," Trump said emphatically as the crowd cheered.

Trump points out North Carolina has been "very special" to him, but that he's doing four rallies today and that his voice is "holding up, barely".

Trump announced that "Sleepy Joe Biden" prefers me over Kamala Harris (the Democratic nominee). He later clarified that this was a joke but that Biden "probably" voted for him at the 2020 presidential election.

At about 12:20pm he finishes speaking, and the YMCA plays. There's time for a brief dance, which the crowd loves — but it's quicker than usual — and then it's on to the next rally!

Pennsylvania awaits.

US Vice-President Kamala Harris will hold two rallies in Pennsylvaia on Monday, local time.  The state is considered pivotal to the presidential race, because it carries 19 electoral college votes.

Winning Pennsylvania, where many opinion polls have been unable to split the two candidates, would put Harris or her Republican rival Donald Trump in the box seat to win the White House.

Harris will hold her rallies in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Trump is holding four rallies on Monday: one in North Carolina, two in Pennsylvania and another in Michigan.
