A North Korean man who was living in the South has been arrested after he crashed a stolen bus near the border in an apparent attempt to return to his homeland.

South Korean news agency Yonhap said the man, in his 30s, was taken into custody by police in the early hours of Tuesday for trying to return to the North by crossing the Tongil Bridge.

The man allegedly ignored warnings from soldiers and rammed into a barricade on the bridge.

He told police he was struggling to settle in the South, where he had been living for more than a decade.

The Tongil bridge is near the demilitarised zone between the two Koreas.

An investigator told the AFP news agency the man missed his family, who were still in the North, and lived under "difficult economic conditions as a construction worker".

AFP said police were considering charging the man with theft and violating national security laws.

Seoul's unification ministry told Reuters around 34,200 North Koreans have resettled in the South, often to escape poverty and oppression.

The ministry, which provides resettlement support for defectors, estimates about 30 defectors have returned to the North since 2012.

In 2022, a North Korean attempted to return to cross the border after struggling to adapt to the South.
