Eyewitnesses describe Israeli air strike as a 'massacre' in northern Gaza town of Jabalia

Neighbours say all of those killed in the strikes were members of the same family.

In short:

At least 24 people were killed in an Israeli air strike on a house in northern Gaza, which neighbours say did not belong to any military organisation.

Israel's military says it was targeting Hamas but that the details of the strike are under review.

Dozens were killed in further strikes in Lebanon and Syria on Sunday as Israel continues its fight against Hezbollah.

An air strike on a house in northern Gaza has killed at least 24 people, reportedly all members of the same family, as Israel continues its renewed offensive against Hamas.

The early morning strike hit a residential building in the town of Jabalia, which has been under heavy bombardment over the past month, with the Israel Defense Forces targeting Hamas militants it claims have been regrouping in the area.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said at least 24 people were killed, some of whom were children.

A further 30 were injured from the air strike, it said.

Multiple eyewitnesses told Reuters the occupants of the building did not belong to any military organisation or faction.

"We woke up and we found this massacre," Mohammed Alloush said.

"We don’t even know why this massacre happened or why these poor people were targeted. They were just living ordinary lives, going about their daily routines."

The Israeli military said it had struck a site in which "terrorists" were operating, but added that the details of the strike were under review.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA and Hamas media put the number of people killed at 32, but this is yet to be confirmed by the territory's health ministry.

Footage shows bodies being piled into vans and being taken to the local hospital. Rescuers say 13 children were among those killed, according to the AFP news agency.

In total, Palestinian health officials say at least 40 people were killed in air strikes across Gaza on Sunday.

Israel says it sent forces into Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun in the north of the enclave to fight Hamas militants waging attacks from there and to prevent them from regrouping.

It says its troops have killed hundreds of militants in those areas since the new offensive began.

Hamas says more than 40,000 people have died in Gaza during the war.

Israel launched its offensive in response to the attack on October 7, 2023, when Hamas gunmen killed 1,200 people in Israel and took about 250 as hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

The Israeli strike reduced the three-storey building to rubble.

Further strikes in Lebanon and Syria

Israel has also carried out further strikes on targets in Lebanon, with at least 38 people killed on Sunday.

Israel has intensified its air campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in recent days, especially in the country's south and the southern suburbs of Beirut.

At least 23 people were killed in a raid in the town of Almat, north of Beirut.

The strike hit a house shortly after a Hezbollah member arrived there for a visit, a security source told AFP, adding that he was injured and later died in hospital.

Israel also struck an apartment belonging to Hezbollah in the Syrian city of Damascus, killing nine people.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said one of the dead was a Lebanese commander of Hezbollah in Syria.

It added that the other casualties included a woman and three children, all reportedly civilians.

Israel Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Sunday that his country had defeated Hezbollah, Reuters reported.

"Now it is our job to continue to put pressure in order to bring about the fruits of that victory," Katz said speaking at Israel's foreign ministry.

The Australian government considers Hamas and Hezbollah to be terrorist organisations.
