Authorities said the rescue operation was challenging and would last hours.

In short:

Thirteen people have been killed by the collapse of the roof of a train station in the town of Novi Sad on Friday.

Three more people were hospitalised. Rescuers say they managed to free two women trapped under the rubble using diggers.

Local authorities in Serbia's second-largest city are urging residents to donate blood.

At least 13 people are dead after the roof of a train station in Serbia collapsed, during what the country's prime minister has described as a "black Friday".

Authorities said a further three people were taken to hospital following the incident in Serbia's second-largest city, Novi Sad, but local media reported dozens were potentially injured.

Rescuers managed to free two women trapped underneath the rubble using diggers, Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said.

They were taken to hospital in a critical condition.

At least 80 rescue workers were dispatched, with some pictured climbing over the collapsed canopy looking for survivors.

The concrete roof collapsed above the entrance of the railway station.

Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said authorities would investigate the cause of the accident.

"We will insist on finding those responsible, those who should have ensured the structure's safety," he said.

"This is a black Friday for us, for all of Serbia, for Novi Sad," he added.

A local health service urged residents to donate blood following the incident.

The station was reopened in July after three years of renovations.

In a post on social media, Serbia Railways said the outdoor roof that collapsed had not been part of the recent works.

"Serbia Railways regrets the accident that occurred, and the causes and any new details from the investigation will be promptly announced," the company said.

A high-speed rail connection between Novi Sad and the capital Belgrade opened in March 2022.
