  • Premier League giant Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the club's new head coach in the Premier League.

    In short:

Manchester United have named Ruben Amorim as the club's new head coach in the Premier League.

Amorim replaces Erik Ten Hag as manager after he was sacked amid a slump in form.

    What's next?

The 39-year-old Portuguese coach will join United on November 11, pending work visa requirements.

Manchester United have named Portuguese football manager Ruben Amorim as the new head coach, four days after sacking his predecessor Erik ten Hag.

In a statement posted online on Friday, the club said it was "delighted" with Amorim's appointment which was "subject to work visa requirements".

"He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club," it read.

"He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins."

The 39-year-old will join the Premier League giant after a four-year stint managing Portuguese top flight side Sporting CP, which is currently first in the Liga Portugal standings.

Manchester United sits 14th in the Premier League standings after nine matches.

Amorim will become United's sixth permanent manager since their most successful boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who led the club to a record 13 league titles.

The announcement from Old Trafford comes after Sporting confirmed on Tuesday that Manchester United were interested in Amorim, and that the Portuguese club would be willing to pay his €10 million ($AU16.5 million) release clause.

Amorim has been described by football pundits as one of the most highly-rated young coaches in European football, after a 13-year playing career that included three Primeira League titles with S.L. Benfica and 14 appearances for the Portuguese national team.

After retiring from playing at age 32, he took part in an internship at Old Trafford under then-Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho in 2018 and still credits him as a "reference point" in his career as a manager.

Shortly after, he became the head coach at Casa Pia in the Portuguese third tier, before taking on tenures with S.C. Braga and with Sporting.

In his first full season in charge with Sporting, Amorim led the side to its first league title since 2002 after a 32-match undefeated streak.

Sporting also won the League Cup, defeating Amorim's former club Braga in the final.

In 2023, the club won its second league title under Amorim's management.
