    Tellez vs Gonzalez: Round 6

    S

    By Simon Smale

Rapid-fire jabs to the head from Tellez.

And a counter jab landing too.

    Very nice work from Tellez.

Gonzalez throws, but the power is coming from Tellez, who misses with an uppercut.

BIG SHOTS FROM TELLEZ! Lefts and rights! Great shots from the Cuban!

Another solid jab from Tellez, against the guard of Gonzalez.

Tellez throws a sickening body shot that shudders Gonzalez./

    Another big shot!

Two jabs once again from Tellez, cleanly landing.

MASSIVE SHOTS! JAB, JAB AND OVERHAND RIGHT!

    Gonzalez is down!

The pressure told, but that was a wonderful sequence from Tellez.

    Gonzalez is no longer smiling.

But he'll be heartened by surviving the round.

    Tellez vs Gonzalez: Round 5

    S

    By Simon Smale

Tellez checks an upper cut and gets jabbed in the face by the elder statesman.

Now Gonzalez lands to the body as well.

Tellez jabs twice and puts a grinning Gonzalez on the back foot.

Gonzalez genuinely looks like an extra in the new Smile movie. It's ... disconcerting.

Tellez is caught, two jabs missing from Gonzalez and then an overhand right.

Oh there's that body shot again though.

Gonzalez has been busy in this round.

Tellez has the speedy hands but those body shots are not landing this time. Time for Tellez to mix it up.

Tellez goes overhand right and misses, the left to the body is blocked and then Gonzalez hits back. Good fighting from the Venezuelan.

Tellez lands now! Twice! The crowd roaring on their fighter.

That was a good round, I think I'd give it to Gonzalez to be honest.

    Tellez vs Gonzalez: Round 4

    S

    By Simon Smale

    Tellez misses an upper cut.

Throws a couple of scoring jabs, so does Gonzalez.

Tellez lands a couple more, he's bouncing around but is caught by a body shot.

Tellez lands to the body, so does Gonzalex.

BIG SHOT FROM TELLEZ OVER THE TOP! That right is a weapon.

He's landed another but he's not quite timing it yet.

Good body shot from Tellez into the body, a great left hook to the body that has Gonzalez feeling a bit - and Tellez is looking for that overhand right to follow.

BIG OVERHAND RIGHT AGAIN! Tellez is finding those shots now!

Gonzalez lands to the body but is caught again with the left to the body!

Tellez throws a left jab that misses and just puts him off balance and Gonzalez wanted to capitalise but I think those body shots have just tenderised him enough that his body did not respond how he wanted it to.

Final prep for Tim Tszyu and Bakhram Murtazaliev

    Tellez vs Gonzalez: Round 3

    S

    By Simon Smale

Tellez is throwing his one-up jabs and just keeping the older fighter honest.

Gonzalez jabs high, getting the guard up and then lands to the body.

Tellez lands to the body now. And again. Good, powerful shots.

BANG! Good overhand right from Tellez!

Left hook misses from Tellez. Overhand right misses too. He's in the orthodox stance and is looking strong.

Gonzalez reaches out a jab and just paws at the air where Tellex was standing. He can't get hold of him, wispy like a ghost as he switches from orthodox to southpaw.

That's a good jab from Gonzalez, Tellez's face a picture of concentration,.

Better jab from Tellez into Gonzalez's jaw.

Good round from the Cuban, who is starting to look good out there.

    Tellez vs Gonzalez: Round 2

    S

    By Simon Smale

"I don't need close rounds," star trainer Ronnie Shields says to Tellez in the corner.

Left labs from Tellez force Gonzalez back.

Gonzalez throws a couple of quick hands too.

    Now it's Tellez again.

Good, quick hands from both men.

Tellez throws a couple more than land.

Now it's Gonzalez who lands a few and backs the Cuban upstart back against the ropes.

    Both men land tentative jabs.

BIG RIGHT FROM TELLEZ OUT OF NOTHING!

Gonzalez throws a couple of shots, backs up Tellez and then unloads but doesn't catch the body well.

    Gonzalez is smiling, taunting" style="width: 650px; height: 433px;" />S

    By Simon Smale

This could be a really good fight.

Expect Tellez to be a real star of the future - if he can get past the knockout artist.

Tellez is in southpaw stance for now.

He jabs and lands, Gonzalez backs away.

Shawn Porter is predicting an early finish to this one.

Both men land a couple of shots on each other's gloves.

Good power from Gonzalez there, who loads up on the guard.

Tellez is fast, flashy. Speedy and confident, barely flinching when Gonzalez throws out a jab, supremely confident in his spacing.

Gonzalez looks, throw a couple and has Tellez backing away.

Gonzalez has to back away as Tellez opens his shoulders, but then gets a three-punch combo away.

Tellez goes to orthodox to end the round, a very tense one without many scoring shots at all.

Yoenis Tellez vs Johan Gonzalez, 10 rounds super welterweight

    S

    By Simon Smale

Ok, time for the next fight of the night.

Yoenis Tellez (8-0), a 24-year-old from Cuba is fighting at the Caribe Resort for the fifth time in his career. Pretty much a home fight for him.

He is taking on 33-year-old Venezuelan Johan Gonzalez (35-3).

Of those 35 wins, 34 of them have come by way of knock out - the first 10 of his opponents went down in the first round.

He is most certainly deserving of his status as a knockout artist.

A tough and dangerous fight for the young Cuban.

    How does mini-Tszyu see it" style="width: 650px; height: 433px;" />S

    By Simon Smale

Here's Nikita Tszyu previewing his big bro's fight.

Nikita has had hand surgery recently, but there was never going to be a chance that he would miss out on being ringside for his brother.

Saaveda feels like the win was 'taken away from me'

    S

    By Simon Smale

Tapia is speaking to PBC in the ring.

God, that eye is a mess.

"His style was really awkward," he says.

"He kept getting me with these little short shots, taking my breath, my legs.

"From the start of the fight I knew he was here to fight.

    "I showed my heart."

He's not to complimentary about his performance today, saying he only gives himself a "C".

"I felt like it could have gone either way," he says.

    Rematch on the cards" style="width: 650px; height: 433px;" />S

    By Simon Smale

    94-92 to Tapia

93-93 even from the other two judges.

    Both men embrace.

The crowd boos, disgruntled by the unsatisfactory ending to the contest from their point of view.

    Thanks, Ken

    S

    By Simon Smale

Great commentary Simon - I can almost smell the liniment and feel the spray of sweat!

    - Ken

Was a good one to watch, that one.

    Tapia vs Saavedra

    S

    By Simon Smale

    What a fight.

I scored it 94-93 to Tapia.

That's despite being knocked down three times.

Will that third knock down in the ninth be the deciding factor in this contest, one that I think Tapia was the slightly better fighter for longer.

    Tapia vs Saavedra: Round 10

    S

    By Simon Smale

Good right over the top from Tapia to open the round!

It glanced off the top of Saavedra's head.

Saavedra comes forward but Tapia is backing nicely and now hanging on.

Good right splits the guard of Saavedra! Great shot!

BANG! WHAT A SHOT FROM TAPIA! A huge uppercut.

    This is a superb contest!

Saavedra works the body and the pair are tangled up, wrestling each other.

Missed uppercut from Saavedra, but a solid shot from Tapia lands.

Wrestling from Saavedra as we approach 60 seconds to go.

    Saavedra lands to the body.

Tapia with a huge right hand! A brawlers swing that collects the Mexican on the side of the head.

Saavedra with a massive shot now!

Both men work hard on the ropes and in close!

Tapia gets through with a great upper cut that sees the head rock back!

    And there's the bell.

    Breathless stuff.

    Tapia vs Saavedra: Round 9

    S

    By Simon Smale

Two rounds to go. I have Tapia ahead by two.

The eye is looking nastier and nastier.

Tapia is moving nicely, but Saavedra is hunting him down.

Nothing clean is landing, until Tapia throws a flurry that came off the gloves mostly of Saavedra.

Now Tapia moves in close and works the body.

Saavedra does well, trying to work the body and gets a fair few through.

    The body shots rain in!

    TAPIA IS DOWN!

For the third time in the fight. He gets back up again. But that face is a mess. It's looking ugly. And the expression looks worn too.

It was just pure pressure and relentless body work that forced the Aussie down.

Body shots from Saavedra - a great series of punches from the Mexican. Superb resilience!

All to play for in this final round I think.

    Tapia vs Saavedra: Round 8

    S

    By Simon Smale

"You've got to work harder!" says Tapia's corner.

The swelling on the eye is grotesque.

We've just seen a replay of that right hand as well at the end of the round. I am stunned Saavedra stayed upright.

Saavedra is hit on the back of the head as he turned - Tapia apologises immediately but Saavedra just needs a minute.

Good combo from Saavedra but then Tapia lands a cracker right back.

Tapia tries to move and Saavedra is wrestling the Aussie back against the ropes which is where he wants Tapia to be.

Good stuff from Saavedra, who is using his real strength to move Tapia about.

Good shot from Tapia is countered nicely.

Tapia is caught a couple of times on the body but lands to the head with that brutal right.

Saavedra backs him up with some body work though - good shots.

Tapia's movement is better now, Saavedra is landing to the body  though.

That's Saavedra's best round since the fourth.

    Tapia vs Saavedra: Round 7

    S

    By Simon Smale

    Cagey start to this round.

Both men have felt the power.

Tapia backs away, walks nicely away from Saavedra.

AND THEN HE LANDS WITH THE RIGHT!

    Good shot!

Tapia lands with another good two-punch combo. Nice movement from Tapia, who is stretching and looking for those outside shots.

Saavedra looks to land on the eye.

Saavedra backs up Tapia to the ropes and lands to the head. Tapia needs to be moving laterally, not just backwards.

The pair clinch, both happy to hold on for a bit.

Tapia lands a jab to the head.

Saavendra lands a couple to the body but then Tapia lands with a big right! Great counter!

Now Tapia tees off on the ropes after a slow-motion combo from Saavedra.

Good round again from the Aussie.

    Tapia vs Saavedra: Round 6

    S

    By Simon Smale

    This is a brilliant fight.

Saavedra is wary now, not willing to feel that power again.

Tapia should have all the confidence now.

Tapia lands with a good jab and then follows up.

A head clash, the pair work in close.

Tapia misses an upper cut as Saavedra works the body and lands.

The movement is better again from Tapia but he needs to land.

Good shot from Tapia, an uppercut that lands and the head rocks back of Saavedra.

BANG! Great shot from Tapia, who landed as Saavedra unleashed on the Aussie, but they just couldn't turn and make the counter count.

Good right from Tapia but he wears a couple on the inside.

    BANG BANG BANG FROM TAPIA!

Great round from Tapia, both fighters are giving their all.

    Tapia vs Saavedra: Round 5

    S

    By Simon Smale

Tapia was given plenty of encouragement from his corner there, they told him that he just needs to move.

And he does move, nicely, getting a shot away and catching Saavedra.

    But Saavedra catches him back.

BIG SHOT FROM SAAVEDRA! Tapia goes back against the ropes but he's OK.

It just seems that Tapia has such great movement, but then forgets that he has to keep moving his head and feet the whole round, he gets caught watching.

BIG SHOT SAAVEDRA! Right on that eye that is swollen horribly, but he just about hangs on.

Good jab and left hook from Tapia, flashy stuff.

    MASSIVE SHOT FROM TAPIA!

    Saavedra is down!

He gets back up but what a right from Tapia! That was stunning! Tapia sat the Mexican down with a staggeringly good right hand, stepping away and then landing perfectly flush.

    Perfect.

    Tapia vs Saavedra: Round 4

    S

    By Simon Smale

"Are you clear?" says Tapia's corner.

"I need to you act like you're clear."

He says he's OK but this could be it for the Aussie, who has to start well in this round.

Tapia is keeping at range, landing to the head with a good shot.

    Saavedra swings but misses.

Good shot from Tapia, rocking the head back of Saavedra.

Saavedra lands with a good, solid, stiff jab that rocks Tapia back.

Saavedra now is working the body and Tapia is hanging on.

That eye is very, very sore.

Saavedra doesn't look as clean and sharp as Tapia, but he hasn't needed to be so far. Perhaps just a bit of fatigue as Saavedra looks for the knockout.

Good shot from Saavedra but Tapis wears it.

In close, Tapia works the body and then lands a shot.

But that eye is starting to become a big problem for the Aussie and he need to get his corner to work on that eye.

It was a much better round from Tapia though after the double knockdown in round three.
