Very shocking to hear about Liam Payne's passing. My brother and I's first concert we ever went to was in 2015: it was One Direction at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney (before they knocked it down and renovated it!), and what an electrifying night it was. The very first night of the On the Road Again Tour. Very sad day, but I'm sure lots of people will forever be thankful to him for the memories made as a result of his music and the band's music!

Sobbing at work

I saw One Direction in 2012 and 2013, it has always been my favourite memory. I went with my mum, front row for their first tour; so baby faced and energetic! Today I am listening to Up All Night, quietly sobbing at my desk at work. Liam was so charismatic and attentive to the crowd; he really was the bigger brother of the group. He will forever be remembered, and we appreciate him for being such an important part of boy band history. He will forever live on in One Direction's fans memories.

Found out the news in my Year 12 maths class, the whole class was shocked and speechless, he was a defining part of our generation and will be missed. My friend is devastated that there will be no 1D reunion :'(

A meteoric rise to fame

Payne was part of the boy band One Direction which was formed on X Factor UK in 2010, by judge Simon Cowell.

The boy band was made up of members: Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.

The singer was 16-years-old when he joined 1D.

One Direction was an extremely successful boy band with the band selling out arenas and making millions of dollars in record sales.

The band took an indefinite hiatus in January 2016 so the boys could focus on their solo careers.

Payne's fellow band members are yet to comment on his death.

Variety’s senior music writer Steven Horowitz says the loss of Payne came as a "massive shock".

"It's just an absolute tragedy for anybody who's been a fan of his or anybody who's been following his career, or who's been touched by his music," he tells ABC News Channel.

Horowitz says after One Direction disbanded, Payne was still "very dedicated" to his career while raising his young son, Bear.

Head of the Buenos Aires public emergency medical services, Alberto Crescenti, said Payne fell around 14 metres, suffering "very serious injuries incompatible with life".

"At 17:04, local time, through 911, the integrated public security system, we were alerted about a person who was in an internal courtyard of the CasaSur hotel," Crescenti said.

"At 17:11, a team arrived and confirmed the man's death.

"We later learned that he was a singer in a musical group. Unfortunately, he had injuries incompatible with life as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death. There was no possibility of resuscitation."
