Australians evacuated from Florida land home

Townsville local Tracey Perrett spoke to ABC NewsRadio earlier after managing to catch one of the last flights out of Orlando, Florida.
The Orlando airport is now shut due to Hurricane Milton, with no flights in or out.
"As soon as we saw all of this traffic, and everyone being asked to evacuate if you could, we sort of thought wow, we could be stuck here, we went and asked our hotel but they were fully booked, so our main worry was we were going to stranded with no-where to go," she said.
DFAT hasn't made a statement on how many Australians are in Florida or attempting to evacuate, but we're trying to find out.

Pinellas County communications director Barbra Hernandez is at the Emergency Operations Centre in Largo, Florida.
She says over 11,000 people have arrived at local shelters over the last two days.
"We are just reeling from Hurricane Helene... a lot of people are really understanding the severity now," Ms Hernandez told News Channel.
"We do worry for those individuals who decide that they want to ride out the storm... some people want to protect properties, some people are afraid of leaving their pets.
"But we have made plenty of shelters available and [are] accepting people with special needs and pets."

It might not seem like the place to be in the middle of a Hurricane, but Disney World is reported to be one of the safest places to be during a storm like this, according to People.
Disney World announced its parks would close today during the storm — the 12th closure in the park's 53-year history.
Nine of those other closures were also hurricane related.

Ron deSantis, the Republican governor of Florida, has said it is too late to leave for those remaining in the path of Hurricane Milton.
"I think at this point you've got to hunker down," he told Fox News.
Florida was only just recently hit by Hurricane Helene two weeks ago, which also caused significant damage and flooding.

Have you seen this picture of Donald Trump helping a child in the hurricane waters?
Yeah... it's not real.
As the label suggests the image is AI generated and the former president has not been out rescuing children.
The ABC NEWS Verify team has popped together this guide on how to spot a fake as multiple false images and pieces of information surface about the hurricane.
Warnings against hurricane misinformation
E
By Esther Linder
A number of rumours and conspiracy theories have been spreading online about the hurricane response, including that authorities were blockading people from evacuating Florida.
The US emergency response agency, FEMA, has sought to combat misinformation with a page on its website titled "Hurricane Rumor Response."
"FEMA does not control traffic flow or conduct traffic stops, which are handled by local authorities. This is a harmful rumor that can put lives in danger," it said.
US President Joe Biden earlier said claims such as aid being diverted away from hurricane response to migrants not in danger were "ridiculous" and "not true".

It's now 10pm in Florida, and Hurricane Milton has made landfall. Here's a brief summary of where we're at for those just joining us:
- The category three storm landed near Siesta Key, 100 kilometres south of the Tampa Bay area on Florida's west coast.
- Two million people were ordered to evacuate with millions more under threat.
- Florida governor Ron de Santis said now was the time to "hunker down" and shelter rather than evacuate as the storm approached, a call echoed by the president Joe Biden.
- More than a million people are estimated to be without power across the US state.
- The storm was downgraded to a category three a few hours ago, but is still expected to cause catastrophic damage across its path.

Governor Ron DeSantis says Hurricane Milton is set to move across central Florida throughout the night and in the early hours of the morning.
"We have seen a weakening of the storm, over the last 24 hours, we also saw it sped up... there is going to continue to be storm surge both on the west coast and eventually the east coast of Florida," he said.
The hurricane hunters flying into the heart of the storm

While millions evacuate from the path of Hurricane Milton, some "hurricane hunters" are flying directly into it.
Captain Nate Wordal is a pilot with the US Air Force, and has been flying reconnaissance missions to collect crucial meteorological data, including the exact location of the eye of the storm to give forecasters accurate data so they can predict where it will hit.
"You can face extreme to severe turbulence throughout the storm, everything's strapped down, everyone is strapped in," he told RN Breakfast.
"And it can be really a wild ride."

US President Joe Biden urges people to shelter

US President Joe Biden spoke earlier to urge people in storm zone to take shelter where they could.
"Milton still carries incredible destructiveness, can wipe out communities, can cause loss of life," he said.
"No one should be confused, it's expected to be one of the most and worst destructive hurricanes to hit Florida in over a century."
The storm is a category three, meaning winds can reach up to 208 kilometres an hour.

Couple plans to hunker down in historic Tampa home with their 8 cats

The two-storey brick warehouse that Luisa Meshekoff calls home in Tampa's Channel District has stood for nearly 100 years. She's banking on it standing tonight and many more nights to come, as she, her partner David Head and their eight cats hunkered down at the home near the Port of Tampa.
"I have never seen it flood down here. And for a hundred years, we can find no information … but that doesn't mean that it couldn't happen," Ms Meshekoff said.
"We wanted to protect the building because it's a historic living entity," Mr Head added.
"And we wanted to protect our kitties."
The couple's home is in a mandatory evacuation zone. They considered leaving, but felt that carting their eight cats to a shelter wasn't an option — and they worried that getting stuck on the roads could be more dangerous than just staying put.

Meteorologist Anthea Masson told News Channel it's sickening to see history in the making.
"We have seen so many hurricanes in the past few years here," Dr Masson said.
"It's very disheartening that we have to go through another event like this again, and such a powerful storm."
Why is Hurricane Milton so fierce and unusual?
J
By Jesmine Cheong
Milton's strength and its dangerous path has led to concerns amongst experts.
Warm water fueled rapid intensification which took Milton from a minimal hurricane to a category five in less than 10 hours.
While it weakened, Milton quickly bounced back.
Milton almost maxed out its potential intensity during its most fierce point.
Milton has also managed to avoid high-level cross winds that often decapitate storms, making it more potent.
Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach says Milton is what someone would want if they were looking "for a storm to go absolutely berserk".

First hurricane of this size to hit Tampa in 100 years

By Esther Linder
Hurricane Milton is still a "very significant" major hurricane despite weakening from a category five to category three storm.
Speaking on RN Breakfast this morning, Brian McNoldy, a senior research associate at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science, said it's been about 100 years since a hurricane of this strength has hit the Tampa region of Florida.
By:https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-10-10/hurricane-milton-live-updates/104454338"It's not so much the hurricane itself, it's where the hurricane is going to hit that makes it quite unusual."
