The Israeli military says it has started a "limited" and localised ground operation in southern Lebanon.
IDF officials said targeted raids against Hezbollah were being conducted in the border area of Lebanon and Israel.
It comes as huge blasts were heard across the Lebanese capital overnight, local time, as the Israeli military carried out strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs.

- Spain: Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares told reporters Israel should cease conducting ground raids in southern Lebanon to avoid an escalation of the conflict enveloping the wider region
- Qatar: Qatar’s minister for international cooperation wrote on X "A monster has been unleashed in our region."

Israeli strikes kill at least 31 Palestinians in Gaza, medics say

While Israel has begun its ground offensive in Lebanon, fighting is ramping up in Gaza, according to local medics.
The Israeli military says it has been targeting command centres used by Hamas.
Palestinian health officials said at least 13 people, including women and children, were killed in two Israeli strikes on two houses in Nuseirat, one of the enclave's eight historic refugee camps.
Another strike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinian families in the Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza City killed at least seven people, medics added.
Later on Tuesday, two separate Israeli attacks killed five Palestinians in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and in the Zeitoun suburb of Gaza City, medics said.
In Khan Younis, in the south of the enclave, six Palestinians were killed in an Israeli air strike on a tent housing displaced people, medics said.
The armed wings of Hamas, the Islamic Jihad, and other smaller militant factions said in separate statements that their fighters attacked Israeli forces operating in several areas of Gaza with anti-tank rockets, mortar fire, and explosive devices.

Communities in southern Lebanon now ghost towns

Aziz has not been able to flee Tyre, a coastal city in Lebanon's south.
Fuel has been scarce since the "pager's attacks" last month, and for a nearly a week, petrol stations have been shut.
Commuting from Tyre to Beirut is a risky adventure, and more so today as the IDF has released an order banning anyone from circulating below the Litani river (which is close to the border with Israel).
"I am sterilising water, boiling it and drinking it. I have a few cans left but supermarkets and all businesses are shut. I cannot even walk on the streets," Aziz told the ABC.
"I can last for another five days with pasta and rice. If the war goes on forever, I will eventually have to leave my house in search of food. I cannot break into a food market as we are all neighbours. Tyre is a ghost town", he explains.
Aziz has not left Tyre earlier as he had nowhere to go and scenes of displaced people sleeping on the pavements Beirut have not encouraged him to move.
"I don't have enough money to rent a place, and it is difficult for us (Shia Muslims) to convince landlords to rent us anything."

The head of Hezbollah's media office, Mohammad Afif, said on Tuesday that no Israeli troops have entered Lebanese territory, and warned that the group's strikes on Tel Aviv hours earlier were "only the beginning".
In a written statement to Reuters, Afif said Hezbollah had not engaged in "direct ground clashes" with Israeli troops, but that it would be ready to do so.

UN Peacekeepers remain in Lebanon despite dangerous development

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has released the following statement:
Key Event"Yesterday, the IDF notified UNIFIL of their intention to undertake limited ground incursions into Lebanon.
"Despite this dangerous development, peacekeepers remain in position. We are regularly adjusting our posture and activities, and we have contingency plans ready to activate if absolutely necessary. Peacekeeper safety and security is paramount, and all actors are reminded of their obligation to respect it.
"Any crossing into Lebanon is in violation of Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a violation of resolution 1701. We urge all actors to step back from such escalatory acts, which will only lead to more violence and more bloodshed.
"The price of continuing the current course of action is too high.
"Civilians must be protected, civilian infrastructure must not be targeted and International law must be respected.
"We strongly urge the parties to recommit to Security Council resolutions and 1701 (2006) as the only viable solution to bring back stability in this region."
IDF orders evacuation of more than 20 Lebanese towns

The Israeli military has ordered the evacuation of nearly two dozen Lebanese border communities.
The orders on Tuesday came hours after Israel sent ground forces into southern Lebanon in what it described as a limited incursion against the Hezbollah militant group.
In a post on X Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Avichay Adraee told residents to evacuate in Yaroun, Ain Ebel, Maroun el-Ras, Tayri, Haddatha, Aita al-Jabal (el-Zot), Jmaijmeh, Touline, Deir Aames, Borj Qalaouiye, al-Biyyadah, Jbal El Botm, Srebbine, Chaaitiyeh, Kniseh, Hanniyeh, Maarakeh, Ghandouriyeh, Deir Qanoun - coastal, Borj El Chmali, Ebel El Saqi, Srifa, Deir Qanoun En Nahr, Aabbasiyyeh, Rachidiyeh, Bint Jbeil, Aitaroun.

Lebanon's caretaker prime minister and the UN humanitarian agency say they are launching an appeal for more than $US400 million to address the humanitarian crisis amid Israel's offensive on Lebanon.
"Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon Imran Riza today launched a $426 million flash appeal to mobilise urgent resources for civilians affected by the escalating conflict and resulting humanitarian crisis in Lebanon," the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said.

The Israeli security official who is giving a briefing now has been asked about how long the so-called "raids" that are taking place in Lebanon might last for.
The security official says they've decided to "speak freely" now.
"It [troops going into Lebanon], is not a bigger thing that is planned long-term," they said.
"We're talking about raids in specific areas in specific times."
The security official says they won't share specifics because they don't want to "give gifts and advice to my enemies".
Also, things could change, they said.
"It's hard to know where things go and I don't want to give numbers that might change throughout time."
So in terms of how far in to Lebanon the troops are going right now, the security official says: "You can imagine there are villages that are hundreds of metres from the border, you can imagine, there are also houses that are dozens of metres from the border," they said.

The Israeli security official has been asked whether IDF tanks have rolled over the border and into Lebanon as part of the ground incursions.
They say they won't comment on that.
They've also been asked about whether the troops that have gone into Lebanon are staying there, or coming back out after short "raids".
The security official didn't really answer it. They said these are "raids that are limited, and you can understand from that what you understand from that".
I'm not really sure what to understand from that, personally.

They say the ground operation in Lebanon is "very limited in scope" at the moment.
They say there are no plans to "go to Beirut", which is much further north than Lebanon's border with Israel.
While they wouldn't say how far Israeli troops had gone into Lebanon so far, they described it as "walking distance".
They said there had not been any clashes with Hezbollah militants so far. That's at odds with information elsewhere today, which has described fierce fighting.

Lebanon's National News Agency has reported casualties and homes destroyed after "enemy warplanes" operated over Yahmar al-Shaqif.
Air raids were reported around Ghandour Hospital in the town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa and around tents in Marjeyoun, where artillery shelling was also reported.
